Tip #1: Neutral coordinating colors

The whole family should aim to wear neutral colors that coordinate with each other and keep patterns minimal. For example, if mom wants to wear something that is a pattern, then the rest of the family can dress in solid color variations that match her. I recommend only one person wearing a pattern, if any. It will be the base to build off of for the others. If wanting more than one person in a pattern, the second should be very simple and not clash with the other. Mom and dad should never be the ones wearing both. We don’t want things to look too busy and keep the focus on your connection.

The family in these photos are a GREAT example of this! This tip makes all the difference in how pleasing, clean, and timeless the final images will end up feeling.

Moms, dresses are a wonderful option and what I recommend first! Dresses with a fitted bodice and flowy skirt are super flattering and perfect for creating fun movement in photos. If that’s not your style, other options could be flowy slacks with a fitted top or jeans and your favorite blouse or sweater. Avoid anything too baggy and try sticking to one fitted/one flowy. For dads, jeans or slacks with a nice button down, polo, or basic tee work well!

Tip #2: no logos, graphics, or words

Any clothing with these things visible will be a distraction, which would also affect how timeless the photos feel. Some accessories that should not be worn include any apple or fitness watches, dress watches are fine.

Tip #3: ask the kids

This obviously doesn’t apply to every age, but if you have opinionated kiddos try to include them in the process and see if there’s something that will excite them to wear. This could help with how cooperative they may be and the overall experience that is had; although everyone should be laughing and playing in no time, either way! You know your children best and will do what works for y’all.

Tip #4: relax :)

Mama, let’s be real. I understand getting everyone dressed and ready for pictures can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. You deserve to have precious memories captured of your beautiful family, so take a breath and they will follow suit! I want you to have the best experience possible from the very beginning.
