Outfit ideas and suggestions for the whole family to look and feel their best!
Moms, lets be real
Being freshly postpartum and navigating life with a new baby can be so exciting, but comes with its own challenges and I don’t want your session to feel like one of them. Getting ready for pictures doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Just know that I’ll be here to support you every step of the way! I want this experience to be amazing for you. You did an incredible thing and it deserves to be documented. Hopefully these tips will ease any concerns you may have!
The MOST important tip when deciding what to wear for any session with me will always be to choose what you feel most comfortable in.
Tip #1: Mom first
It’s easiest for mom to pick an outfit first and go from there for the rest of the family. Mom, I want you to feel good and as confident as can be. Don’t overthink it! I recommend dresses first, maybe there’s a maternity one you liked that would work now as well. If not a dress, jeans and a cute nursing top, favorite blouse, or sweater work great. Shoes aren’t needed, everyone go barefoot! It’ll be the most natural in the comfort of your own home. If you’d rather not be barefoot, dress socks are a good option.
Tip #2: neutral COORDINATING colors
The whole family should aim to wear neutral colors that coordinate with each other and keep patterns minimal. For example, if mom wants to wear something that is a pattern, then the rest of the family can dress in solid color variations that match her. I recommend only one person wearing a pattern, if any. An exception would be if you want to do some kind of sibling matching, then mom and dad can be the ones in solid. I advise against mom and dad both wearing patterns. Get the idea? We don’t want things to look too busy and keep the focus on your connection. Dad can wear jeans or slacks with a nice button down or basic tee. If you have opinionated kiddos, try to include them in the process and see if there’s something that will excite them to wear.
Tip #3: keep it simple for baby
Usually a swaddle will be used so pick out one that coordinates well and any headbands, bows, or hats you may want baby to wear. They don’t need to wear anything but a diaper when swaddled, unless you’d prefer them to and in that case I suggest a simple fitted onesie, preferably white. The same onesie will work perfectly for any photos taken of them not swaddled. If there is a special outfit you’d like baby photographed in, we can work that into the session as well.
Tip #4: no logos, graphics, or words
Any clothing with these things visible will be a distraction. We want the photos to feel as clean, natural, and timeless as possible.
